Stone: Lockyer exit was a footballing decision as Whitelock becomes Ashford's No.9

Ashford's manager says he is putting his faith in on-loan Gillingham striker Zac Whitelock.

Ashford United manager Craig Stone told KentOnline that releasing club captain and record goalscorer Gary Lockyer was a footballing decision.

Stone said he is putting his faith in on-loan Gillingham striker Zac Whitelock as first-choice No.9 and did not think it right to keep a player of Lockyer's standing on the bench. Lockyer was offered the chance to stay and fight for his place. Stone said he ran the call past co-owners Lloyd Hume and Dave Warr.
