Prestedge: I leave Sittingbourne with my head held high
The sacked Brickies boss says the decision came out of the blue and is sure the squad would have turned things around.
Reece Prestedge says he leaves Sittingbourne with his head held high after the Isthmian South East club sacked him, KentOnline reports.
Prestedge went after almost a year in charge, following Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Steyning. Assistant manager Joe Anderson has taken caretaker charge alongside first-team coach Godfrey Poku.
“It’s come out of the blue,” Prestedge told KentOnline. “There wasn’t any conversation about it before. It’s a results game and results weren’t good enough at the time. There are reasons for that, but I also know we would have turned it around.”
Sittingbourne won four and drew one of their first five games before a long injury list hit, then won only two of Prestedge's last 10 league games. He took over last November with the side 12th and led them to fifth and a play-off semi-final.
“I think I can hold my head high,” he said. “I wish the club well. I thank the players and the fans, who have always been brilliant.” He added that he would still like to get back into management and learn from it.
The club thanked Prestedge in a statement on Sunday. They have dropped to 12th, two points outside the top seven, and visit Broadbridge Heath on Saturday (3pm).
